On October 18th, Dr. Theresa Glomb, professor and Toro Company-David M. Lilly department chair at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, joined Gopher Athletics for a Leadership U Speaker Series event. With student-athletes, coaches, and staff in the audience, she presented various research-based "work hacks" designed to make our day-to-day lives just a little better by creating more purposeful and satisfying work.

Dr. Glomb's nearly 25 years of workplace wellness and mindfulness research focuses on how small changes can positively impact work and wellbeing. Since receiving her Ph.D. in social, organizational, and individual differences psychology from the University of Illinois and her B.A. in psychology from DePaul University, her highly acclaimed work has been featured in top academic journals and media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and Huffington Post.

Dr. Glomb's findings are backed by her rigorous studies, but they were influenced by her life outside the workplace. The motto "Work Hard. Have Fun. Choose Kind. Be Present" started in the Glomb family as a quick goodbye reminder as the kids jumped out of the minivan and made their way to school. Dr. Glomb shared that starting their day with the phrase allowed her and her family to "go about their days in this really intentional way." This intentionality first appeared in her research when preparing for her TEDx talk, "Let's Make Work Better," but still serves as a part of her framework today. Each micro-intervention shared by Dr. Glomb aligns with one of the four tenets of her research, but together, they illustrate how to bring intentionality to our daily lives.

Dr. Glomb encouraged every audience member to "pan for gold" to find the small nuggets of her research that can significantly impact their lives. Whether audience members were student-athletes struggling to balance their schedules or senior leaders striving to be more intentional, everyone could find a "work hack" that could change how they approach their responsibilities, teammates, and intentions in their work.

Leadership U was honored to have Dr. Theresa Glomb share her research findings and incredible storytelling with all of Gopher Athletics.
