Originally announced on April 2, 2022 - Reposted for the Induction on Sept. 9, 2022
Former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher great "Sweet Lou" Hudson was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, announced today by the organization. He and fellow Gopher great Lindsay Whalen, who is also a 2022 inductee, are the third and fourth Gopher athlete honorees in Minnesota school history. The duo joins former letterwinner and coach John Kundla (1995) as well as Gopher star Kevin McHale (1999). The induction ceremony is set for Sept. 10, 2022.Â
Hudson, along with Archie Clark and Don Yates, were the first Black basketball players to receive scholarship offers from the University of Minnesota. Hailing from Greensboro, N.C., Hudson finished his Gopher career with 1,329 points, which ranks 17th all-time in the Minnesota record books. An All-America selection and All Big Ten First Team honoree in 1965, Hudson averaged 20.4 and 8.9 rebounds during his Gopher career in 65 games played. His No. 14 Gopher jersey was retired in 1994.
Hudson was the fourth-overall pick in the 1966 NBA Draft by the St. Louis Hawks, eventually compiling a 13-year career in the NBA. A six-time All-Star, he amassed nearly 18,000 career points and finished 12th in the league's all-time scoring list upon his retirement. After playing 11 seasons with the Hawks, Hudson's number 23 is retired.
Hudson was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1988, the Minnesota Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
