Gophers Fall 4-3 to Ohio State in Opener

Ben Meyers matched his career high with a pair of goals for Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 6/8 Gopher men's hockey team dropped a 4-3 Big Ten contest to No. 18/14 Ohio State on Friday night as the two conference rivals opened this weekend's series at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
The loss snaps a six-game winning streak and a seven-game unbeaten streak against the Buckeyes for Minnesota (6-5-0 overall, 3-2-0-0-1-0 Big Ten).
The Maroon & Gold scored three times in the opening period as Jack Perbix scored his first of the season 2:42 into the game and Ben Meyers scored twice in the final minute of the first period. Rhett Pitlick added two assists for his first career multi-point game while the pair of goals from Meyers matched the forward's career high.
The lead wouldn't last, however, as Ohio State (7-2-0, 4-1-0-0-0-0) scored twice in the second and twice in the third to claim the opening game of the series. Jake Wise, Patrick Guzzo, Gustaf Westlund, Joe Dunlap scored for the Buckeyes.
Jack LaFontaine (6-5-0) made 16 saves while Jakub Dobes (7-1-0) made 23 saves.
Minnesota held a 26-20 advantage on shots, going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-5 on the power play with the final advantage coming with just 13 seconds left in the game.
