MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 18 Gopher Hockey program rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to earn a 2-2 overtime tie with Michigan on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci with the Wolverines picking up the Big Ten bonus point in a shootout.
The Maroon & Gold now have a chance to clinch a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship on Saturday evening as idle Penn State earned at least a share of the conference title in addition to the No. 1 seed at the upcoming Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.
Minnesota (14-12-7 overall, 9-7-7-4 Big Ten) rebounded from a pair of goals by Michigan with Luke Morgan finding the net at 4:27 of the first period and Nick Pastujov adding to the lead at 3:56 of the third period.
But the Gophers answered the second Wolverines goal quickly as Jackson LaCombe scored his third of the season – and second in as many games – at 5:47 of the third off an assist from Ryan Zuhlsdorf. Minnesota then completed the rally on a five-minute power play when Brannon McManus pocketed his ninth of the year at 15:58 with assists from Robbie Stucker and Ben Meyers.
Following scoreless 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 overtime sessions, Michigan (15-14-4, 10-10-3-2) picked up the Big Ten bonus point in a sudden-death shootout. Jake Slaker scored the only goal in the shootout on Michigan's second attempt.
Jack LaFontaine moved to 7-7-6 with a 27-save performance in 65 minutes of hockey before adding four unofficial saves in the 3-on-3 overtime session. Strauss Mann made 53 saves officially with another five in 3-on-3 overtime to move to 15-13-4.
Notable
Minnesota put a season-high 50 shots on goal in 65 minutes – the team's highest shot total since 50 in a 2-1 overtime win over Harvard on Nov. 18, 2017…The Gophers will retain the Mariucci-Renfrew Trophy with a 1-0-2 regular-season record heading into tomorrow's series finale. The traveling trophy must be won via head-to-head regular-season record, meaning Minnesota will keep the trophy for the ninth time in the last 10 years…McManus has now tied his single-season high for points with 26 (nine goals, 17 assists)…Stucker has more than doubled his offensive production in his second year with the program – going from three points as a freshman to seven points this season…Zuhsldorf needs one more point to match his single-season career high for points.
