MINNEAPOLIS – For the second week in a row, the No. 1 Gopher men's hockey program earned two-thirds of the Big Ten Conference weekly honors with Jack LaFontaine picking up Big Ten First Star of the Week accolades and Ben Meyers claiming Big Ten Third Star of the Week merits.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, LaFontaine led the nation with a .985 save percentage and a goals against average of 0.50 last week among goalies with more than one appearance. The senior led Minnesota to its fourth-straight sweep with two Big Ten wins on the road over then No. 5 Michigan, making 67 saves on 68 shots in the series and capping off the first half with his second shutout of the season. LaFontaine has won 10-straight games for Minnesota dating back to last season and has allowed two goals or fewer in each of his last 13 starts. The Carolina Hurricanes prospect leads the nation with eight wins (three more than any other NCAA goalie) while he ranks third nationally with a 1.00 GAA and fourth nationally with a .965 save percentage (LaFontaine has played in at least twice as many games as the goalies in front of him on both list). He leads the Big Ten in all three statistics.
A native of Delano, Minn., Meyers tied for the Big Ten lead last week with four points (one goal, three assists) as Minnesota picked up its fourth-straight sweep with two Big Ten road wins at then No. 5 Michigan. The sophomore factored into all three goals (one goal, two assists) in the series opener – tying for his single-game career high. Meyers then added an assist in the series finale to match his career-long point streak at six games. An alternate captain for the Maroon & Gold, Meyers is currently tied for the team lead with nine points (four goals, five assists) and has contributed points in seven of Minnesota's eight games this year.
Minnesota has now completed the first segment of its 2020-21 schedule. The Big Ten Conference will announce the remainder of the schedule at a later date.
