Gophers Make the Most of Their Time on Semester Break By Giving Back
1/24/2019 9:54:00 AM | Athletics, Student-Athlete Development, M.A.G.I.C.
Over 180 Gopher student-athletes from track & field, men's hockey, women's hockey and men's gymnastics volunteered at Feed My Starving Children this month. The Gophers, along with all participants, packaged over 750 boxes and helped provide over 155,000 meals for the organization. In fact, track & field set a facility record when it packaged 83,592 meals in Eagan, Minn., earlier this month. As a result, over 450 children from various countries will be fed for an entire year because of their contribution.
Along with the Feed My Starving Children visits, the Gophers went to visit families at Masonic Children's Hospital and played bingo at the Hope Lodge. Men's hockey also held two open skates that featured autographs and fan experience sessions. Wrestling also utilized their semester break as it held a youth clinic around one of their events.
Back in December, the Gopher football team packaged 24,755 pounds of food at a Detroit local shelter during their bowl game. Prior to their bowl trip, Gopher football specialists also raised monetary donations for Christmas gifts, while the Gopher men's and women's hockey teams aided in a teddy bear toss, also for Masonic Children's Hospital. Men's basketball participated in Toys for Tots, while Gopher softball ended their fall semester by packing shoe boxes of Christmas gifts for overseas children. Women's basketball also held a Dimes for December pledge to aide homeless in the Twin Cities area.
School is back in session, but the community outreach doesn't stop there. Be sure to catch the Gophers at various events this semester, including Masonic Children's Hospital or Gopher Experience, a program focused on local middle school children coming to campus and teaching them the history of the University of Minnesota and its diversity in sports.
