Schierhorn Nears Gophers Record

11/20/2018 4:03:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the 12th time in his collegiate career, Eric Schierhorn didn't allow a goal against on Saturday at 3M Arena at Mariucci as the Gophers picked up a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence and the senior goaltender moved within one of the University of Minnesota career shutout record.

A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Schierhorn moved into sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota with a 12-save performance against the Saints, moving to 1-2-0 on the year and 56-43-4 in his career. Only Kellen Briggs and Adam Wilcox have more shutouts in program history, sharing the school record with 13 each.

This weekend, Schierhorn leads the Gophers back into Big Ten play as the Maroon & Gold host Michigan State at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year enters the series with a 9-1-1 career record against Michigan State.

Gophersports.com caught up with Schierhorn last week to talk about his senior season...

First off, let's go back to last summer when you and Tyler Sheehy participated in a study abroad program in Italy. What was that experience like and what were some highlights of the trip?

It was super cool to be able to do that. Just another thing that the University of Minnesota provides that makes the experience so great. It was unbelievable to go out and experience a different culture and get outside of the bubble that we are normally in here. It was eye opening. All the food was great – the authentic pasta – it was all amazing. And it was amazing to be based in Florence for three weeks. Everything about it was cool.

It's hard to believe you are a senior already. How fast have things flown by for you?

It's insane. At the end of each year, you take some time to look back and also look ahead. Now all of the sudden senior year has hit us all like a ton of bricks. We don't have a whole lot of time left here. It honestly kind of sucks because I love it so much here.

You've played in 104 career games since joining the Gophers and you made your 100th career start earlier this month. Only four goaltenders in Gophers history have played more games than you (Adam Hauser, Kellen Briggs, Adam Wilcox and Alex Kangas). What's it mean to you to be included among those guys?

I'm very fortunate. I've been lucky when it comes to injuries and also that the coaches have believed in me. I'm really thankful they've given me the chance to compete. I've had such a fun time here with all those starts and so many different experiences and learning lessons. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Last weekend, Gopher Hockey alum Casey Mittelstadt had a pretty impressive shootout goal for the Buffalo Sabres. After the game, he credited the Gophers goalies with helping him work on his shootout attempts. Is that something that goalies don't maybe get enough credit for? Helping out the skaters like that?

I think it goes both ways. A lot of guys will ask for our advice on things because they want our point of view. And vice versa too. We want to know what they see and what they are thinking. That open dialogue from both sides can be really helpful and set everyone up for success.

With the Las Vegas game behind us, we've been talking to guys about recent road trips, and one that keeps coming up was your sophomore year when the Gophers went to your hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. Was that special for you to go home and play in front of your family and friends for the first time in a long time?

It was a big time highlight for me because I hadn't played at home since I was in peewees. People back home – friends and family – followed what I was doing and where I was at, but it was really special to be able to go home and play in front of them for the first time in six or seven years. It was a lot of fun to share that experience with everyone who has been following me and supporting me for all these years.
