MINNEAPOLIS - Gopher Hockey alum Travis Boyd will become the 114th Minnesota alum to play in the NHL and the 19th to do so this season when he makes his NHL debut tonight with the Washington Capitals.
Boyd and the Capitals host San Jose at Capital One Arena at 6 p.m. CT.
A native of Hopkins, Minn., Boyd skated for the Gophers from 2011-2015 and was part of the first class in program history to win four-straight regular-season conference championships (starting Minnesota's NCAA record of six-straight titles).
The forward notched 96 points (32 goals, 64 assists) in 148 career games and was a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree as a senior after tallying career highs of 41 points and 19 goals in just 32 games.
A four-year letter winner and a three-time academic all-conference recipient, Boyd helped the Maroon & Gold clinch four NCAA tournament berths including a pair of Frozen Four appearances. In his four years with the program, the Gophers led the nation with 105 wins.
Following his senior season, Boyd signed with the Washington Capitals, who drafted him in the sixth round (177th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Boyd has skated in 208-straight games for the Hershey Bears in the AHL - giving him the longest active streak in the league. With the Bears, Boyd has skated in 177 regular season games, scoring 138 points (41 goals, 97 assists). He was Hershey's Team MVP in 2016-17, skated in the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic, and was named to the 2016-17 AHL Second All-Star Team.
Boyd will wear No. 72 with the Capitals.
