Remembering Dick Dougherty

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – The University of Minnesota and the Gopher Hockey program mourn the loss of Gopher All-American and U.S. Olympic medalist Dick Dougherty, who passed away earlier this week.
With the Gophers, Dougherty played three years under John Mariucci and helped the Maroon & Gold to the 1953 and1954 national championship games. In 1954, he led the team with 42 goals and was one of three First Team All-Americans for the program along with Ken Yackel Sr. and John Mayasich. Dougherty still ranks tied for fifth all-time at Minnesota with 109 goals and 10th all-time with 187 points.
Following college, Dougherty continued his hockey career at the international level and was a member of the silver-medal winning 1956 U.S. Olympic Team that competed in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy.
A native of International Falls, Minn., Dougherty was part of International Falls High School’s first-ever varsity hockey program in 1949 and was named to the all-state tournament team in 1950.
Dougherty was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and the ‘M’ Club Hall of Fame in 2006.
