Opening regatta set for Oct. 5

MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota rowing head coach Alicea Strodel announced the schedule for 2024-25, featuring cross-country trips and nine events, culminating in the Big Ten Championships in May.

"We felt that our 2023-24 schedule prepared us well for the Big Ten Championships," Strodel said. "Because of that, we chose to have a very similar schedule this year. "I am grateful for Director of Athletics Mark Coyle and our administration's support to travel and compete at the highest level."

The season opens Oct. 5 at the 44th Annual Head of the Mississippi Regatta, hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club. The unique event features a nearly three-mile race course starting near the Lake Street Bridge, while fans are encouraged to attend and check out the Irene Claudia Kroll Boathouse along the campus' riverfront.

A pair of scrimmages against border rival Wisconsin highlight the next action for the Golden Gophers. The Maroon and Gold host the Badgers at Medicine Lake Oct. 12 before heading to Lake Mendota in Madison, Wis., for a matchup Nov. 2.

Minnesota closes its fall schedule in Charlottesville, Va., for the Rivanna Romp hosted by Virginia on Nov. 10.

The Gophers will again take advantage of winter break as they travel down to San Diego, Calif., for an extended training trip in mid-January before classes pick up for the semester.

The spring season begins with a duel against the Bulldogs of Gonzaga Mar. 16 from the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The racing continues Apr. 5 as the Gophers travel across the country for their next regatta, facing Tennessee at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., as part of the Rocky Top Invitational.

Minnesota returns to a familiar venue at Wyandotte County Lake and Park in Kansas City, Kan., racing in the Big 12/Big Ten Double Duels Apr. 11-12. The final tune-up before championship season is slated for Apr. 18-19 in Sarasota, Fla., as the Gophers participate in the annual Big Ten Invitational from Nathan Benderson Park.

Looking to improve on last year's fifth-place performance, the Maroon and Gold head to Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2025 Big Ten Conference Rowing Championships at the Indianapolis Rowing Center. The regatta will take place May 18 as the Gophers battle the rest of the league for a conference title.
